LUMIERE INTEMPORELLE

In 2016 we had the chance to project our work on the Notre Dame Cathedral in Strasbourg. In partnership with ACT Lighting Design, which was in charge of the production, light and illuminations of the western facade, Drop The Spoon wrote, produced and created the content of the video mapping on the southern façade.

From the stones that compose it, the cathedral tells us about the journey of light, from the dawn of time to nowadays.

A poetic and initiatory journey and projected from 15 projectors placed in 3 projection towers in order to cover all the volumes of the elements making up the façade. A complex 3D projection setup for a result visible to everyone and from any angle, but which above all made it possible to magnify the building and transform it as respectfully as possible.

facts and challenges

OUR VERY FIRST ARCHITECTURAL MAPPING

After years working for live shows, our first architectural mapping was directly a high level challenge :
a complexe Cathedral mapping with 3D projection.
15 Graphics designers and animators were involved for 5 months on this new adventure.

FROM DRAWINGS to VR

Hundreds of drawings were created to study how to make the stones speak and make them tell their story.

SCAN 3D

To recreate the volumes and details as faithfully as possible and to allow the greatest precision of projection, the building was scanned and remodeled almost stone by stone. A very long and complex work for our 3D team.

2D ANIMATIC

3D ANIMATIC

All the sequences were previewed and edited on the 3D model of the Cathedral.

PREVIZ IN VR

For our 1st mapping we added a new tool to our workflow, all the renderings were previewed and analysed in VR.

8K UV Map

The Final Rendering required a complex 2D “Puzzle” in 8K containing the 3D surfaces.

8 Projectors on 3 different projection towers where used to cover all the volumes.

The final and more exciting step was to discover how the stones reacted to our content and our story.
With only 5 hours of darkness per night within less than a week on site, the whole team adapted, corrected and improved each of the scenes to offer the best and respectful result possible for this majestic monument.
